More good news for poker fans this week, and the quest for legalisation, comes from Chattanooga where a man was shot after a police raid on a high stakes home game on Thursday.
If it was just a normal private game of poker of course we wouldn’t even mention but just to show the US Government that poker is a reputable pastime the police found $25,000 in cash as well as quantities of marijuana and pills. Nice work!
Apparently when the police made the raid 5 men tried to escape from the rear of the property including Clifford Billups, a 32 year old man with an impressive existing criminal record as it was. Having not taken kindly to the police presence he waved a gun around of his own and was promptly shot, although he did not sustain life-threatening wounds.
The charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and unlawful possession of a weapon will now be added to his rap sheet while the game organiser is facing a charge of gambling promotion. It seems that the police had made their move on a quiet night as rumour has it that up to $100,000 can change hands on some occasions.
