2011 has been an exceptional year for humble poker player Erik “Sly” Seidel. Erik is a true legend of the game. However, for a player with 8 World Series of Poker bracelets, he’s rarely in the media. Always seemingly to timelessly plod along in the background relatively unnoticed, bar the occasional televised appearance and interview. Why this is, who knows… one thing we do know is that he probably won’t evade the limelight this year.
His poker play, live event cashes and tournament wins this year have been nothing short of phenomenal. So far Erik has managed to bag a whopping $5,400,000 in over 5 major events, with 12 total tournament cashes -and it’s only August!
This now means he’s officially made history, besting the likes of Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu for the top spot in all time tournament cash winnings ($14,697,297) and most all time tournament cashes.
His hot run all began in Jan 2011, making an appearance at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. Buying into only two events – $5,000 NL Hold’em – 6 max in which he placed 3rd for $46,560, and the $25,000 NL Hold’em High Roller event taking 4th place for $295,960.
After cashing in both the above, Erik “Sly” Seidel struck whilst the iron was hot by flying to Australia in the same month and winning the monstrous $250,000 Super High Roller event for $2,472,555 and winning a further $618,139 in the $100,000 No Limit Hold’em tournament.
The tournament cashes go on……. and on…… and on, Erik’s remaining tournament results for 2011 can be found here.
So – What’s next for Seidel? How about a win at the WPT Malta or Marrakesh? Or even a WSOPE Main Event win? Well, bookies are already tipping him as ones of the favorites at 50-1 for the WSOPE – I’d say, well worth a go.
