Player metrics is a term for what most poker players do naturally to some extent but the poker pro’s really utilise a players metrics to gain those extra percentages that are the long term difference between being an Epic winner or loser.
Phil Hellmuths known player metrics leak and weakness was literally seized on, like a smaller bleeding fish, by the other more predatory poker sharks at his table during his short and not sweet appearance at the $20,000 High Roller Epic Poker League tournament in Las Vegas. In some non poker sharks species during the gestation period the more aggressive and larger baby sharks eat their brothers/sisters and only one baby will emerge victorious from the mother sharks womb. Phil Hellmuth was about to find out what that felt like.
Being a High Roller tournament event the field will include a lot of great players, unfortunately for Phil Hellmuth and his mindset/gameplan on this day his table opponents were Victor Ramdin, Carlos Mortensen, Gavin Smith, and Eugene Katchalov!
Player metrics are an opponent poker players game play habits, tactics, tendencies and other things. There are the obvious player metrics like betting patterns but one that the poker pros really use is something that you either know through playing with a poker player for a long time, or, you have to pick up on it instantly and stick the knife in, twist it and pull it up until the victim feet stop twitching at your table. It is do or die for you or your opponent but then that’s poker.
The poker players main betting fashion at the moment is the 3 bet or 4 bet re raise. What happened to Phil Hellmuth is that the other poker pro’s at the table know he plays small ball poker (tries to win lots of small pots without risking his stack and certainly never going all ins if he can totally avoid it). One of the poker pro’s tested him out with a 3 bet re raise and Phil Hellmuth folded, showing that his known player metrics was going to work today. Passive Phil was in town to play and win not Poker Brat Phil who wanted to be the King of the table.
Now that Phil Hellmuth had folded once to the 3 bet others smelt the 3 bet blood and came in because the waters were warm and the feeding frenzy had just begun. But you needed to get in there quick before the prey realises he is slowly being 3 biten to death and has to react to save his poker tournament life and/or his poker pride. When he does fight back it is time for him to either rise up or fall.
Another poker player metric is the players personality, as this effects virtually every single poker decision, thought, strategy they do. Poker stimulus and poker response. Unfortunately for Phil Hellmuth his pride came before his Epic fall.
